Staff Picks of the Week: March 3, 2017
We wouldn't call it a theme per se, but once we picked out our five favorite projects from this past week we realized they all had something in common. Each designer has made excellent use of color. This isn't something that stands out individually, but put these five together and you can see that creative use of color is a prominent feature in all of them. From a pair of smart glasses to a collection of dystopian illustrations, every one of our five favorites this week demonstrates a high level of skill and colors that catch the eye.
Denon DJ, SC5000 by Simon Park
Designing tools for DJs is a challenging blend of interface, engineering, and product design for an extremely picky audience. Simon and his team execute that challenge with skill, using bright colors and quality materials and finish to make for an extremely useable and attractive product.
CARGO CULT by Sergey Prokofyev
Sergey's post-apocalyptic series make dramatic use of light, shadows, and texture to create an evocative, surreal experience. He also seems to incorporate some sustainability into his concept art, which raises all sorts of fascinating questions.
DAQRI Smart Glasses by Kyle Cherry
These glasses are straight out of Tron and they have nothing to do with delicious frozen cocktails. They do, however, balance utilitarian functionality and technological grace, with a futuristic aesthetic that looks really damn cool!
The Reading List by Krishna Fitzpatrick
On this identity design project Krishna uses stellar anthropomorphic logotype with a tasteful and original color palette. Her work is exceptional and she manages to avoid any kind of branding cliches.
Compression Knit Shoes by Polina Krichko
There are so many cool things happening here. For starters, the use of materials is innovative and carefully considers human factors. They are also tailored to support any possible leg position, adding versatility to an already impressive and comfortable looking product.
