Staff Picks Of The Week: October 21
If there was one consistent trait across our favorite projects for this week, it's that every one of them was presented thoroughly. There's really nothing we love more than getting to see the steps of the creative process so we can understand the motivation and ideas behind the design. Each of these projects is highly artistic and impressive in scale, but equally impressive is how the designers behind them managed to present us with a thorough look at how they were done.
"Drown In Her Madly" by Andrea Moresco
Andrea Moresco's piece is extremely detailed and elaborate. What's exciting is that he did all of the work with a mouse on Illustrator and Photoshop. The dark moodiness and pop culture references, not to mention the activity taking place on every inch of the canvas, make this piece feel like something done by a hipster Hieronymus Bosch. Check out our interview with Andrea in this week's Above the Fold!
Kenchikuka Toilet by Pau Moltó Revilla
Social commentary through a toilet? Now we've really seen it all! This 8 Hour Design Challenge winner is brightly colored, bringing to mind a Lego toilet. And, just like Legos, all of the parts break down. The idea behind this is that it can be packed down to a small size while still using high-tech ceramics, making it perfect for millennials who move around a lot. Why you would want to bring your toilet with you everywhere you go is another question, but we think you can figure out what the designer is trying to say here.
2015-Moal/WayneCarini-Roadster by Alberto Hernandez Mendoza
We're not sure what's cooler, the fact that Alberto actually designed such a badass car from sketching to completion or that he managed to capture the entire process and share it with us. Alberto's sketches and photos provide us with an insightful look at how he creates and present a demonstration of a full cabinet of design skills. He also includes some tight old school analog renderings.
PUMA KING "Naturale pack" Made in Italy by Danny Dance
These limited edition shoes are finely crafted while still feeling athletic, even while using a cool material like tanned leather. The intricate detail and contrast between the earth tone uppers and fluorescent soles reminds us how refreshing it is to see footwear that is innovative and stylish yet still classic feeling.
As an adult, the sign of a good playground is one that immediately makes you wish you were a kid again, and, as far as playground designs go, RiverTown is exceptional. Besides being fun and imaginative, the concept of boats - a big one for older kids and little one for the tikes - is fitting given that this playground is located in Florida. This is pretty much a dream structure, and all we want to know is when are they putting it up so we can play on it?
