Staff Picks Of The Week: November 18
With the exception of a mind-bending chair design, the theme that stood out for us this week was a wide range of colors that pop and excite. Most of the projects we have included here grab you with eclectic, vibrant color palettes and also because of the clarity of artistic vision applied, despite the fact that they were commissioned for business purposes. Without further ado, here are the five projects that left us smitten this week!
Created for a Boxymag piece about Singaporean foods, Richard's illustrations are notable for their chalky textures and bright mood. There's a freshness and vibrancy to his style that serves the delectable delicacies well. Now we're hungry.
Betula Chair by Maharshi Bhattacharya
At first glance, we actually thought this chair was only a rendering, but it's the real deal and it's pretty freaking amazing. The gravity-defying cantilever back imbues a sense of weight and lightness simultaneously. Made entirely out of birch ply, we are given an exciting silhouette and fascinating construction, not to mention a chair that looks both sturdy and comfortable.
Sun King Brewery - 20 Sided Rye - Official Gen-Con Beer Can Design by William Ray
Indiana's Sun King Brewery is as well-known for their wildly creative can designs as they are for their imaginative beer, which is frequently sought after by beer nerds. Their logo and much of their packaging design pays tribute to the Aztec sun god, but back in August they decided to pay tribute to something else. To our knowledge, Twenty Sided Rye may be the first and only beer brewed in homage to Dungeons and Dragons, and William Ray's can design displays graphic design prowess that is illustrative and clever. Cheers to a fine tribute!
Skip Hop/Activity Center by John Healy
John designed this "Activity Center" in collaboration with a pediatrician, and the result is a very thoughtful, tiny human-centered design. It's clear that they thoroughly considered ergonomics for early year development with a "whole body" approach to play and learning. Plus, for a baby, it looks like a whole lot of fun.
Teardrop Hotels by Anna Simmons
Navigation is all about GPS these days, but we still appreciate the artistry and design of a good map. In this case, Anna takes a stylized approach to cartography with special attention to the details and hand drawn type full of color and personality.
