I am Xun Ye, an industrial designer and maker. I graduated from Art Center College of Design in 2011 with a bachelor degree in Product Design. Prior to Art Center, I received an bachelor degree in Electronic Engineering from UESTC in Chengdu, China. I worked full time for 2 years in Lumdesign after graduating from Art Center, and then I was approached by couple manufactures to design houseware products for US market. I worked from the conceptual design in front of computer, to solving detailed engineering problems in the factory, I realized that doing freelance is the way to really learn all aspects of industrial design.
I did projects for different companies and startups. Although my design process varies depends on client requirements, I am always designing for real human need: I always start a project with thorough research of the market and actual users, then I try my best to understand and address the real problems emerged from my research. Rapid prototyping is a key tool for me to understand challenges of the project, therefore it’s usually used in very early stage.
I work with clay a lot and I built a handmade ceramic brand called Haizii in 2016. The handcrafting process provides many nutrition to me as a designer. I can also meet, talk and receive feedback from real customers since I sell my work personally.
Finding a way to bring back handmade elements and the emotional attachment to mass production products is an ongoing project for me. I am glad that you are interested in what I am doing. I would love to hear your vision and work with you to make it happen.
