Senior Design Manager
Freeport, ME
Mar 2015 - Present (9 years 8 months)
I am a player-coach in my current role as Senior Design Manager. My team and I have successfully transitioned into a work from home workflow process in order to protect employees during the pandemic. The team is comprised of industrial designers, footwear designers, apparel designers and a subject matter expert in outdoor soft goods. The team's role is to design all private label L.L.Bean products for L.L.Bean's Hunting & Fishing, Sporting & Equipment, Footwear, Travel and Home categories. The team creates products for all four merchandising seasons in Direct to Consumer, Retail and Wholesale accounts.
Our methodology is based upon a user-centered design approach, ethnographic research and focus groups with Subject Matter Experts. Additionally, user-insights are provided by our in-house insights team and the trend services we meet with throughout the year. Our unique responsibilities include creating original concepts and products, authoring and revising manufacturing specifications, maintaining BOM's and technical drawings in FlexPLM, working in 3-D platforms and primarily communicates to factories through vector line art drawings (Adobe Creative Suite). The team is responsible for placement of all on product branding & info-graphics, material, trims and component selection, color, print, pattern and graphic applications to category products. We present category assortments to the CMO and CEO at the conclusion of each season. We engage in rigorous product testing prior to market launch. We collaborate with Sourcing, Graphics, Creative/Marketing and Merchandising to create innovative products that meet and exceed the identified margin targets while delivering the performance and quality expected in the segments we compete in. My team is highly versatile and technical one, capable of converting a verbal handoff or product brief into a viable commercial product in three to five months. We work with factories in the US, Asia, South America and Europe.
