I knew very little about Industrial Design when I first chose it as a career path. The main thing that drew me to the field was the sketching. I’ve always had a need to draw, whether for pleasure or to help me visualise my ideas. In the beginning, I thought that the idea was the most important thing, and that all the designer needed to do was flesh out ideas on paper and let engineers do the rest.
I’ve come a long way since then. Industrial Design has been, and will continue to be a great challenge for me, but one thing I’ve learnt is that execution is equally important as the idea. Ideas are the easy part and there is no shortage of good ideas.
The other thing I’ve learnt is that designers need to be thinkers and readers. We need to question the world and find the truth. In recent years the argument of ‘knowing what is good design’ has been debated a lot. The debate goes on - but one thing is true - there is good and bad design. So how do we become designers that produce good design?
There is no short answer. All I can do is continue to practice, stretch my mind and question my assumptions.
