Enthusiastic designer of illustrated books including craft, gardening, how-to, art, photo and architecture.
I love creating complicated print interiors with complex type heirarchy and lots of images, charts and tables. I am happy to do layout, production, photo retouching and color correction on my projects. I have designed dozens of photo, art and gift books. My magazine publishing experience includes stints as design director at Artforum and Bookforum as well as Index magazine, and positions in other magazine art departments from freelancer to Associate Art Director. I studied publication design at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in the Netherlands. In my portfolio you will see books I have designed and produced for Artbook|D.A.P., The Taunton Press, Vice Media, Rizzoli, Metropolis Books, and the Timber Press, among others. In these cases, finding special materials, the best binding and packaging solutions, and excellent, affordable printers is as crucial as great design.

Freelance Book Designer & ProducerBrooklyn, NY2005 - 2013 (8 years)Vice books created book packages for several publisher, including MTV, Powerhouse, Simon & Schuster, and Rizzoli. I worked closely with the editors, publishers and printers, did design, layout, production, color correction, and even occasionally went on press. The books I produced for them included The Vice Photo Book; Snoop Dogg: Reincarnated; Sasha Grey: Neu Sex; Skinema; Dear Diary; Fashion Cats; News, Nudity & Nonsense; and The Vice Guide to Travel, among others.

Design DirectorIndex MagazineNew York, NY2000 - 2003 (3 years)Index was a fashion and lifestyle interview magazine with firm roots in the New York art world. It was run by prominent New York artist Peter Halley. Index was known for its cutting edge photography and we commissioned work from artists like Ryan McGinley, Juergen Teller, Wolfgang Tillmans and Terry Richardson. We were a small staff and I worked very closely with Halley and the editorial team. I handled design and production on my own and went on press to oversee color for every issue.
