Ken Karlic co-founded Splice Design Group in 2010 with Cathy Schaefer, a former classmate from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Splice Design Group leverages the skills and experience of Ken and Cathy, each with over twenty five years of experience serving various industries in developing communication tools, including identity, print, interactive, and 3D projects. Along with Cathy, Ken is a hands-on designer, personally responsible for managing, conceiving, and executing all creative projects. In addition, he is responsible for new business development.
Previous to Splice Design Group, Ken ran Karlic Design since 1992, serving corporate and institutional clients regionally, nationally, and internationally. Highlights include the worldwide corporate capabilities for Standard & Poor's, a 256-page feasibility study for a new contemporary art museum in Vilnius, Lithuania, for the Guggenheim Foundation, and an over 400-page feasibility study for a new contemporary art museum in Baku, Azerbaijan, for GCAM Group. Other clients include Smithsonian Institution and Zurich Financial Services Group.
Ken Karlic began his career working in several studios in the Chicago and Baltimore areas, as well as at the Maryland Science Center at Baltimore's Inner Harbor, where Ken's original role was to create and manage an in-house team to design all graphic materials, including identity, print, and exhibit graphics. Ken later became Design Manager, where as one of seven senior staff, he led a team of ten in the Exhibits Department, responsible for content development, fabrication, audio-visual, and graphics.
Originally from Chicago, Ken Karlic attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he studied architecture, graphic design, and painting, and received a BFA in Graphic Design. Ken paints in watercolor, participates in plein-air painting competitions, and his work is in private and institutional collections including Johns Hopkins University.
