My name is Shruti Sharma. I am a senior student majoring in industrial design at the Rochester Institute of Technology, NY. I was born in New Delhi, India where I spent 18 years of my life. Being the youngest in the family, I’ve grown up in a very affectionate and loving environment.
Back in high school I was a science student but was always mesmerized by creativity. I loved to paint and build new things. When I was in 11th grade, my brother came to RIT for his undergraduate studies and later introduced me to few of his friends who were majoring in industrial design. They explained what industrial design really was and how much fun it was creating new products. After researching the program more, I became interested in all it had to offer. I took my SATs, prepared my portfolio, applied to the program and got in!
Being far from home, I thought it would be great to make some friends from the same community so, I got involved in few clubs, one of the first being OASIS (organization for the alliance of students from the Indian subcontinent). Being the cultural head in the club helped me improve my communication skills and made me more organized. From then I realized how interesting it was to meet people from all over the world and know about their cultures and lives. Few months later, I was accepted as an intern in Global Union, one of the major International student organizations on campus and later got promoted as a marketing assistant and then as the director of marketing where I got a chance to brush up my graphic design skills by making posters, flyers for events etc.
As much as I’ve gotten to understand myself, I believe I get happiness and stay passionate when I make someone else happy or am able to solve their problems in some way or the other. Hence, I want to make people smile by solving their problems in the most efficient way possible. I want to make people happy and content through design.
