Two Squares Make a Circular Bag

A true circilar economy is not only about materials, but also about efficient use of those materials. The aim was to make a bag from a new circular material, Treekind Leather.

Since the material is made from an otherwise unused waste stream, I wanted to create a design that would lead to minimal offcuts. The bag is therefore created from two exact square sheets. The pattern parts needed for the reinforcement of the holes and inside pockets fit in half the height needed for the main pattern parts, which is an advantage when creating multiple bags.

The thread for the seams and the rope for the handles are all made from natural, biodegradable materials. Because the whole bag is made from the same type of materials, it can be recycled in an biological cycle.

The design won the 1st prize in the Blue Economy Design Award contest.
