My name is Paul FitzZaland. I am an industrial designer, illustrator and model maker with over 22 years of professional experience in the toy and juvenile products industry. I've worked for with Mattel Fisher-Price, Sesame Workshop, MARVEL, HIT entertainment, and Nickelodeon to name a few. I currently live and work on a small island surrounded by Killer Whales. I'm always interested in new projects.
I hold an Industrial Design degree from Emily Carr University of Art + Design, an Associate’s Degree in Biochemistry from Camosun College, and a bunch of other certificates for everything from Advanced 3D Modelling (Solidworks) to Marine Standard First Aid. I also have some sad-looking participation ribbons for high school cross country - but that’s not relevant. What is important is that I have spent my whole life imagining, creating, making, and doing. It doesn’t matter if the project is big or small I always commit wholeheartedly to it success.
What have I done? Well, for several years I worked on staff at Mattel Fisher-Price in New York as a toy designer with their highly successful Sesame Design Team. After deciding to return to BC I continued to freelance to the toy industry while expanding my practice to include book design, children’s illustration, product design and animation. There’s also been a website or two designed along the way. I’ve curated a series of short film festivals, designed sets for plays, written electronic music (see: https://soundcloud.com/lofi_r0b0t_b0y ) , designed puppets, and created a series of educational comic/activity books for a Nutrition in Schools program sponsored by Kin’s Farm Markets & Cobs Bread. I’ve also set up my own small model shop where I make toy prototypes and create custom parts for restorations.
Today I live with my wife and two children on Salt Spring Island. When I’m not designing or making something I’m usually hiking along the beach or out at sea with the local Marine Search and Rescue unit (RCM-SAR 25). I’m currently looking to add some new clients to my freelance roster. I’m always happy to meet in person or online to discuss myself and my skills and how they will benefit your project. Older work can be found at www.paulfitzzaland.com or www.designasaurus.net Current samples of my work and references will be supplied upon request.
Thank you for your time.
Best regards,
Paul
