I am not a traditional industrial designer. I have a master degree in mechanical engineering and a master degree in industrial design, and my specialty is right in-between these two fields.
My area in product development is material and surface design; where the focus is to combine and optimize users' emotional requirements and the manufacturing industry's technical requirements in symbiosis. It is a handful of people in the world dealing with material and surface design within the methodology that I am in.
That’s probably why I am currently working as a SME – Texture Design Engineer at Apple Inc. in Cupertino, CA. SME, Subject Matter Expert of material and surface texture design for total appearance and manufacturing - for materials and finishes on metals, plastics, and glass for the exterior of Apple products. I am traind to translate the semantic space to metrics for manufacturing, which involves collaboration with industrial design as well as product design and manufacturing design in the field.
This means that my work is not a physical artifact or a gestalt of some sort. However, what I have developed during years of research and design case studies with companies is a methodology and knowledge in human behavior and communication within the design field; but also how to communicate this into manufacturing.
I have some old graphical as well as product design stuff at my website, however a lot of what I have done within my field as a material designer are confidential. But I need to add a website so that is what I provide for now. If you would like to get an understanding of my current profession I could share my thesis work, a book.
I gladly share my knowledge, however I cannot reveal anything about my current work at Apple Inc.
Thank You.
Regards, Martin Bergman
