Shingle Springs Ambulatory Clinic
A medical clinic designed for the Miwok tribe and near their casino. Since the members are uncomfortable visiting medical clinics, the question was how to make the space more comfortable to those visiting, who are much more comfortable in the out of doors. Thus, needed to bring the outside in, and create symbolic ties with their culture. The casino had already incorporated the angled line reflected in traditional basketry, so ANOVA mirrored this in the clinics façade. I then took this element as a directional way-finding element. First, the idea of walking through the dappled sunlight of a forest popped. Due to budget restraints, instead, each floor became a season, with angles from traditional basketry creating movement and direction, and cedar at the check-in windows focusing attention as well as bringing the smell of the outdoors in.
