Crystal Airport

This facility is the new center of solar flight
research in Southern California. The focus of research will be on new transportation technologies using solar power and natural occurring weather conditions. Set in the antelope valley of California, these motor-less glider planes
take advantage of the warm thermals present in this location which provides them with the necessary uplift force
needed to gain altitude. The structural deconstructed control tower serves just as important of a purpose guiding the planes in and out of the airport. The architecture of the building is designed to be visually recognizable and iconic from far above the sky. Its unique cable system attached to the control tower not only serves an architectural significance,
marking the building as an identifiable landmark in this vast desert landscape, but it also serves a structural
significance because it carries and transfers all the load of the angled roof system up to the control tower and down to
the ground.
