A top drive is a complex piece of machinery used on a drilling rig to rotate the string of pipe which is lowered into the ground.

I was given a 400-page manual and asked to create a maintenance video that made this technical information simple for new righands to comprehend. The challenges included filming the top drive and crew for the video during energy production. Since a drilling project cannot be stopped when started, only certain areas of the top drive could be filmed.

The solution is a combination of footage, still photography and illustrated blueprints based on the manual specs. Together, it creates a well-rounded explanation of the processes and parts of a top drive for proper maintenance.
