06 - "InvinciButterfly" (2010) Adventure Portraits Media: Markers, Foil Stickers This piece features the young lady who requested it inserted into the piece as a princess. She specifically mentioned she liked butterflies so a giant one of those was included as well. This was all set against a version of the video game world found in Super Mario Bros. In order to add a big of sparkle to the piece, I took foil sticker lining (the sticker frame that surrounds the stickers on a page) and cut them up into tiny pieces. I then filled the butterfly outline with these foil fragments, creating something unlike any other Adventure Portrait ever made.
07 - "Photogra-Me" (2010) Adventure Portraits Media: Markers, Stickers This young lady specified her interests as photography and animals. From those ideas, I created a series of faux-Polaroid photographs, each capturing a special moment from the subject's fictional life. In order to fill in the unknown details of her life, I relied up stickers which I used to enhance the drawings. In this case, a sticker of a pirate's hat lead me into drawing her as a pirate. Similarly, stickers of a pith helmet and boomerang seemingly fit together to me. Additionally, shiny foil animal stickers were used to enhance her made-up encounters with a turtle and zebra. This piece is an example where less inspiration is drawn from the subject and more is drawn from the tools being used to create.
08 - "Jungle Pirates" (2010) Adventure Portraits Media: Markers, Stickers This Adventure Portrait featured two different subjects, each with their own particular interest: one chose something with the jungle, the other chose pirates. It was my own idea to include some sort of Yeti-like create for them to search for. The monster is shown hiding behind a tree, implying that he is maybe passive but certainly seeking to not be found. The gentleman in the piece has a pirate's hat but it has fallen off his head, implying that he may not be the best pirate. Instead, his partner seems much more adept at tracking the beast, even using her very own telescope (provided by sticker).

Adventure Portraits

The Adventure Portrait series consists of art made via a type of improv. Customers or attendees (depending on the event) would first request their very own Adventure Portrait. They'd then be asked a series of ridiculous questions, all geared towards learning about the subject. I would then create an image which played off of their desires in equal parts fulfilling and nightmarish.
