Jia Lu Ni

I began my college career studying architecture from 2011-2012. During this time I learned an incredible amount about my own design processes, my capacity for problem solving, and my passion for design. Ultimately, I decided to finish the year out, then switch to Industrial Design because I valued the user-centered approach to architecture but wanted to apply that thinking to a broader scope of projects as well as learn the technical skills to better communicate my ideas and make beautiful products.

I spent a semester as an international exchange student at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal in Germany. I believe that we are defined by our experiences, and travel allows us to become immersed in different cultures to keep us flexible in adapting to new environments and understanding new perspectives. The Industrial Design program at Bergische Universität Wuppertal has a focus on design process, and its goal is develop students’ design strategy skills with an emphasis on production. I took courses that aligned with the fourth-year fall ID curriculum at UC such as a design studio, a course on design communication, a course on materials and processes.
