Two students in the Literary Publications class helped me create this Experience Entrance We used painter's tape on the floor and hung fabric strips from the suspended ceiling to creating our own "river" gallery viewers had to pass through to enter. (There were low-friction paths on the edges for accessibility.)
The event had a steady flow of traffic. Gallery observers spanned ages and backgrounds thanks to three TV stories within 24 hours prior to the event.
I submitted this entry creating a metaphor of the Missouri River. It was a beautiful sunset.
MIxed media entry, influenced by past and new perceptions of the Missouri River.
Photo collage of a positive experience from the flood - a closer family thanks to shared housing over the summer.
A functional lamp made of found items from the great Missouri.
Pottery inspired by the river. I missed taking the photo during the event due to the chaos, but the creator set up his installation in the art studio where I was able to photograph it.
A cheeky entry I submitted on behalf of the Missouri River. See what you will.

Event Coordination: FLOODED Art Gallery & Reading

In conjunction with the class I teach at BSC, I planned a campus event that turned the dynamics of the class process on its head: an invitation for faculty, staff and administration to create original works for a gallery and reading. Their task was to create work responding to the floods of 2011.

The event was held in the National Energy Center of Excellence on the BSC campus, in a double conference room with one long wall of windows overlooking the beautiful Missouri River, the guest star of our show. The gallery was open before the reading, for people to view the art at their own pace and visit and discuss the gallery with other attendees. Then we gathered in the auditorium for readings of the three pieces and what turned out to be a quite moving slide show of news photos covering the flood.

About 50-75 people came through the gallery and about 30 stayed for the reading.
