I have been sewing since I was 8 years old, and when I learned that fashion design was an actual career path, my mind was made. Sewing was my passion in life and fashion design was my future. I started making anything and everything I could. From napkins with my grandma, to following commercial patterns in personal sewing lessons, to designing and making my own prom, homecoming, and graduation dresses. I took on any project I had time for. It was not until my senior year of high school when I discovered just how wasteful and polluting the overall fashion industry is. I spent the year researching apparel waste and its effect on the environment from production processes to landfill waste. Ever since, I want to be part of the sustainable solution within the fashion industry. I want to help make it more environmentally conscious, more socially aware, and more beneficial for everyone involved.
The hands on, personal touches that designing and sewing allows is my favorite part. Everything is unique to the creator; fitting their wants, reflecting their skill, expressing their style. Concept and details are the most important contributors to my design process. My designs are meant to have an impact, to have meaning, not just to be worn. A lot of research is done beforehand and during the design process, from fabric choices to symbolic prints or colors to environmental consciousness to target market. Everything has a meaning.
