Every new semester I write the course outline for the grade 11 and 12 visual art courses that I teach. Drawing on my experience from prior years, I develop units specifically for my unique student population. Once I have decided upon the projects, I source the necessary materials - often working with re-used or recycled media. I calculate and submit a budget keeping careful track of unused resources to keep costs reasonable.
I plan comprehensive lesson plans, assignment sheets and rubrics so that my students know exactly what they need to do to be successful in each project. I seek out additional resources to enhance every lesson: exemplars, news articles, videos, documentaries, and anything I think will further expand my students' knowledge to make their art as insightful, culturally aware and socially relevant as possible.
Lastly, I manage the student art displayed throughout the school. I work with my students to optimize the initial placement of their work, and then continue to monitor works as they may fall down or become vandalized in a busy environment. Ensuring a respectful and quality display of student work increases the overall pride in the learning environment.
