This is a sketchbook assignment I give to my students before we launch a much more in-depth self-portrait. The students are to first print out black and white selfies which they reduce to shapes defined by value differences. This project increases awareness of how they are manipulating the elements and principles of design to ensure a different, yet recognizable new rendition of their own face.
