These are some examples of my gates and fences incorporating elements of Japanese design and details, and basic old time craftsman ideas and joinery where apropriate.
Gates are made using mortise-&-tenon or half-lap construction. They cannot sag.
The high bar keeps the posts in alignment and plumb. This one had a natural arch to it, which made a nice touch.
Two-tiered tables to display and organize client's very old bonsai collection. For the table legs we used Juniper wood sourced through Sustainable Northwest Woods.
Stepped mortise makes for stronger leg-to-rail joint and a clean look.
The client's herb garden was under constant attack from her two pigmy goats, Romeo and Juliet. Her property is a large opening on a deeply wooded hillside. The herb garden is 27 feet in diameter, divided into three sections by three paths which enter through three gates and meet in the center. The vertical bars are made of rebar.
The three gates in this fence are each made with mortise and tenon joints.
These railings on the walkway of a cloister in a Buddhist retreat facility were tricky to build because the concrete curb was squared on the top step. I placed another post there by which to organize the bottom rails.
