Bell Volt Helmet

Industrial Designer Hilgard Muller.

As lead mechanical I learned a particularly important lesson on this project. What would eventually become the production model was the second version. We cut a cavity on the first version and began testing it. When we found areas of the helmet which were not going to make the standard of performance I was surprise to see there was not enough viable options to fix the problems. Hilgard had to re-design certain sections to fix these issues and we cut a second EPS tool. This is the first and last time this has happened on my watch. From then on, more careful scrutiny of presented designs occur, always envisioning a Plan B on existing tooling. The practice of reviewing and discussing potential problems and the fixes which may exist is paramount for all concerned, and a learning opportunity for both ME and ID.
