Junior Packaging Designer
SMURFIT KAPPA CORRUGATED UK Ltd
Purfleet, United Kingdom
Feb 2011 - Jul 2011 (5 months)
During the third year of my design course at London South Bank, we were required to find a work placement in the design industry before moving into our final year. I obtained a placement at Smurfit Kappa (Lokfast Division), one of the UKs leading packaging companies.
As Trainee Packaging Designer, I was in charge of all daily sample production for the Lokfast factory. This required designing and creating samples to a customer’s specification, then posting them out for approval. I would also draw up the CAD files for the manufacture of approved orders. This placement gave me a really good chance to see how the company worked, at all levels and I felt a great sense of responsibility. The location of my office was in full view of the factory, meaning I could witness the entire manufacturing process, which was a great learning experience.
Main Duties Involved:
- Complete control of packaging sample production
- Designing and producing samples daily
- Finalising the CAD files for manufacture
- Providing customer support within the business
- Supporting the customer service team with new enquiries
- Interaction with customers both internally and externally
- Interaction with all departments within the business, including manufacture
- Other in house design tasks
