Call me David R. I’m an editorial design director and a good eater.
I use design to grab people’s attention, pull them in to content and carry them through a narrative. It’s important that I do this: Good design is good business. As you’ll see in my portfolio, well-designed editorial informs, clarifies, intrigues, delights and entertains. It helps readers fully appreciate the value of original content, building the trust and loyalty that strengthens brands and provides fertile ground for advertisers and marketing partners.

Group Design DirectorFort Worth, TXJul 2010 - Jan 2015 (4 years 6 months)• Defined the creative direction of all editorial design — photography, illustration, typography and layout — for American Airlines’ twice-monthly American Way, quarterly Celebrated Living and bi-monthly Nexos inflight magazines.
• Initiated and executed the redesigns of American Way and Celebrated Living, earning the praise of their readers and numerous industry awards, including Most Improved Publication, Best Travel & In-Transit Magazine, Best In-Flight Magazine and Best Transportation Publication.
• Designed meticulous and versatile magazine templates to maximize the efficiency of the Art Department and the visual consistency of our products.
• Delegated, directed and coordinated the efforts of four direct reports, ensuring deadlines and budgets were maintained for three inflight magazine titles totaling 34 issues per year.
• Collaborated with the Managing Editor and Production Department during pagination and closing cycles, overseeing design and print quality and the timely delivery of magazines to press. -
Deputy Art DirectorDallas, TXDec 2002 - Jul 2010 (7 years 7 months)• Managed the production of original art — from the logistical strategy to the execution and receipt of finished materials — according to the given budget and timeline; directed and supervised talent; maintained cost and quality control and provided status updates to the Creative Director and Managing Editor.
• Developed and maintained a searchable archive of original editorial photography and illustration; reduced Art Department expenses by negotiating the re-use of archived images.
• Directed and designed all editorial art and layouts in the annual Professional and Lifestyle Directories; designed features, departments and columns in D Magazine alongside the Creative Director and Art Director.
• Collaborated with the Marketing/Branding Departments to conceptualize and design presentation and collateral materials. -
