The goal of my MSc. thesis was to use a brand new paper material to develop an environmentally friendly paper lid for take-away coffee cups. The main focus was to conduct a series of material tests to gain insights onmaterial properties and to apply suitable manufacturing techniques. User research showed that the paper prototype was favored over plastic lids, which created an exciting foundation for further development and to take our product to market. The thesis officially ended in Dec 2012 but my thesis partner and I continued to work on technical development and a go-to market strategy. All prototyping costs were financed by the Swedish incubator Drivhuset and we designed five different prototypes of the paperlid.
