Pieces consists of a series of magnetic square panels, made of Canadian woods. Each one is decorated by an aboriginal craftsperson, using his or her preferred medium. On the back of each panel is a statement about the piece and the artist who made it. The panels can be combined and configured in a number of different ways to create decorative objects for the home such as boxes, bowls, coasters, trivets and sculptures.
This product puts traditional Native Canadian craft into a contemporary context. It connects amateur craftspeople with access to the consumer marketplace in a retail location other than the craft sale or souvenir shop.
This product was designed through a process of collaboration and interaction. Intense research was completed through hands-on work with a group of craftspeople.
Brainstorming and development was facilitated within the group. The final product is a compilation of ideas and development that was achieved through work as a group.
