Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown

Healthcare and research facility located in the historic district of Belém in Lisbon, Portugal. Colin created the program and operational plan and worked closely as healthcare designer with Lead Designer India-based architect Charles Correa during the design and documentation phases. The 538,000-SF facility includes cutting-edge diagnostic, treatment and research space, and joins with the waterfront and surrounding community through inviting public spaces such as an outdoor plaza, amphitheater, auditorium, and restaurant. An exhibition space will display to the public research that is taking place in the facility. Throughout the facility, clinical spaces have private gardens for patients that let in natural light and provide wayfinding and soothing healing environments. The research labs are connected to the clinics through interaction spaces designed to foster the vital collaboration between researchers and caregivers throughout translational research and clinical trials.
