Not-So-Cliche Shelf
Assigned in my "Manufacturing & Materials" class, this project aimed at getting us to work with metal and wood, while integrating them into the same project, in this case, a shelf.
Using hard maple and padauk wood, I sliced, planed, sawed, glued, and clamped. I fashioned the metal supports, hammering each rod out on an anvil. The entire project mounts to the wall using four screws; two at the metal rods, and two which fit into keyslot hole cuts I created with a keyslot hole cutter on a milling machine.
It is pretty sturdy when up on a wall! The tension from the metal holds the shelf level, while the keyhole slot cuts and their respective screws keep the shelf from sliding down the wall.
This project allowed me to experience much; from accurate wood and metal working, to keyhole slot cutting.
