Wish You Were Here?
This hypothetical exhibition was a group project, persuading employees in the Seattle area to realize the importance of their paid time off, encouraging them to vote to pass the Minimum Leave Protection, Family Bonding and Personal Well-Being Act of 2008. If passed, this amendment to the Fair Labor Standards Act would guarantee that all employees who have worked at least a year would get a minimum of three weeks paid vacation time. It is slated to appear on the King County voter’s ballot as a part of the Washington State fall election.
This exhibition emphasizes the importance of paid vacation time, both for the mental and physical health of employees, and for increased worker productivity. The exhibition space itself is an abstraction of the confined and imposing nature of a cubicle. A twist on the standard “wish you were here” postcards show the viewer missing from the scene, reminding him or her what they are missing while they are at work.
