Astitva - Working with Indian Crafts

This was a team project that involved working in two different locations. We spent two weeks in Bhuj, Gujarat. Bhuj is home to several craft communities. Among these many, my team chose to work with the bell-making community. Our task was to share living spaces with them, and then return to our campus in Bengaluru, where we were to represent this community in any medium we saw fit.

Our final piece was an installation. We constructed a giant bell that was suspended from beams on the ceiling. This bell contained landscapes of the lifestyle and work done by the bell making community. Also, we created a sound-scape that told a story of these people.

The value this project had towards my education as a communication design student is hard to explain. However, this project taught me about working with designing a physical and visual experience.
