I am a Singaporean. Without knowing our past, we will never understand our present, and would be unable to design for our future. The past of Singapore was a miracle, which explains our present. I see Singapore building towards a brighter future and I am sure excited about it! We have the most effective and most successful self-sufficient vertical towns here, especially Tampines New Town, my home and one which I am extremely proud of. What Singaporean urban planners and architects have done for Singapore surpasses any town I have been to in the west. Our towns successfully implemented theories by Le Corbusier's 'Vertical city', Oscar Newman's 'Defensible space', and Ebenezer Howard's 'Garden Cities for the future', which is what no city in the world has ever done before. It truly reflects on what Lee Kuan Yew once said, "if the British can do it, we can do it too, but better,"
Architecture is about people. It defines the way we live, and the changes that goes on in our lives. I believe one should design for a cause, and not for themselves. Designing for people who really needs a place for sanctuary, shelter, and comfort. Designing for a more efficient and sustainable environment, rather than designing to make the rich richer. Architecture is noble, yet a servant. It serves the people because good architecture assists their daily growth rather than hinders it. Architecture understands history, memories and emotions more than any of us put together.
