Carnival of the Curious
International Society of Typographic Designers
2013 Brief:
The Circus provokes a wealth of delights for all ages and temperaments.
Now, the Museum of the Circus is coming and you are asked to provide the branding and publicity for the building which will be used to entertain queues waiting for events to begin. You must create the name, logo and applied identity for the Museum of the Circus.
Concept:
The Carnival of the Curious is a travelling exhibit that narrates the lives of circus folk, showcasing their everyday lives that regular people considered to be outside traditional societal norms. For a side show performer their norm was to be exhibited and it was the audiences’ norm to gawk.
Who is curious? The curious looking people or the visitors who are curious to look?
The design of the logo takes inspiration from hand painted signage that was common in fairground ephemera. The eye like shape is intended to reinforce the critical look at voyeurism.
