Dan Sc.1 - Dan is an obituarist. We decided to go with drab browns with some blues, and incorporate more of the blue with the passage of time and intensity of emotion.
Alice and Dan Sc 1 - Alice is a "waif" who is an America free spirited ex-stripper. We used purple as her color, with movement toward red or blue depending on her emotion/situation in the scene. You will also see a few different hair styles on her - which was a fun challenge to work with!

Larry and Alice Sc. 1 - This is the first time we see Larry, a dermatologist. The white coat is a recurring piece. We chose grays and burgundy for Larry. You will notice the burgundy become more saturated throughout to show his emotional baggage.
Larry, Alice and Dan, Sc. 1 - This is from my first show as head designer. Closer was a student production at Cal State LA, directed by Lemuel H. Thornton III for his thesis project in the MFA program there.
Alice Sc. 2 - This is the only time you will see Alice in red. We really kind of wanted her to stick out in this scene as she interrupts Anna and Dan... Kind of like an alarm or siren.
Anna and Dan Sc. 2 - Anna is introduced here. She is a photographer with her own studio. Her colors were green and brown - earth tones. Pay attention to her prints and jewelry as the show progresses.

Anna, Alice and Dan Sc. 2 - Busted!
Called out!
Anna Sc. 4 - Also watch her layers.
Larry Sc. 4
Dan and Alice Sc. 5 - Galery - This scene was a gallery opening for Anna in which Alice's picture is featured. Alice is in her little black dress. We wanted her to look nice, but like she bought her dress at a thrift store so we put her in a classic style dress, simple.
Alice Sc. 5
Dan and Alice Sc. 5 - Dan is on his way to his father's funeral. We wanted him to look a little disheveled, as not only has his father just died, but he has fallen in love with Anna and is emotionally frantic.
Alice and Larry Sc. 5 - Larry's sweater is supposed to be cashmere - a gift from Anna. Larry struggles with "bourgeois guilt" and doesn't feel right having money as he came from a working class family. Look for where this sweater reappears later.

Dan and Alice Sc. 6 - Notice Dan is in all blue and a nicer fitting suit than some of the previous ones. He is cheating on Alice with Anna and is saturated with emotion.

Anna Sc. 8 - One of my favorite looks for Anna. This character gave me some challenges as she is supposed to have money, and I didn't have much to spend on the whole show! I also had issues finding the upscale bohemian look I was going for in the right color pallet. I am very pleased with how it turned out though!

Anna Sc. 9 - Notice the layers, jewelry and print!
Alice Sc. 9 - Does the sweater look familiar? How about those tights! I love this outfit! It also fit the feel of the character in this scene.
Larry and Anna Sc. 9 - Notice that he is still wearing a dark shirt, but covering it with the suit jacket, like he's trying to cover up his pain.
Anna and Alice Sc. 10
Larry Sc. 11 - Larry has won back Anna - see how the burgundy is gone?
Larry Sc. 11
Larry and Dan Sc. 10 - Not sure how visible it is, but Dan "looks like shit" because Anna has left him for Larry. He's back to his drab browns.

Anna and Larry Sc. 12 - Notice Anna's lack of layers, prints and jewelry. In this scene we wanted to show where the characters either ended up, or went back to. The men have the same outfits they had for scene 1 to show they want to start over, pretend nothing ever happened. Anna has a plain top on and no accessories to show she is starting fresh.

Curtain Call
Larry Sc. 7 - You can see his emotion - despair, sadness, loneliness... Because the set was so minimal, I was able to have the focus on costumes more than usual. We tried to use the costumes to show each character's emotional baggage in one way or another.
Larry and Alice Sc. 7
Larry and Alice Sc. 7 - The wig was a challenge. It didn't really look like what I expected, and I am not experienced in hair enough to have altered it without fear of ruining it. I should have risked it and chopped it a little shorter.
