Design Patent Examiner
USPTO
Sep 2013 - Jul 2014 (10 months)
Design Patent Examiners at the United States Patent and Trademark Office examine design patent applications to determine new ornamental designs. Design Patent applications are for the appearance of an invention, versus a Utility Patent Application, which is for the manufacture or purpose of an invention.
As a Design Patent Examiner, I searched through United States and international patents in EAST (Examiner's Automated Search Tool) to find references (and sometimes patents to prosecute against) Design Patent applications on my docket. We looked up patent information on the USPTO's proprietary databases and wrote up patent prosecution on a modified version of Microsoft Word.
I interacted with the applicants and the applicant's representatives to try and figure out the best way to make their Design Patents allowable, as well as to answer their questions on the Design Patenting process.
I worked with an experienced team who helped me with all aspects of the patenting process, from IT and software help, to experts on patent procedure, Design Patenting Examiners with experience in different areas of design patents and Utility Patenting Examiners who worked in similar areas on the Utility side of patents.
