Call it an interesting mix of experience, education, and learn by doing. Growing up in agriculture has given me a good foundation in practical design, a strong sense of why things break and fail in the product environment, and value sense regarding profit, cost constraints, and making a profit. As well, I have been fortunate enough to work on many interesting projects and products within the Minneapolis/St. Paul Metropolitan area since moving from rural Minnesota after college.
