I believe that great design needs to meet the practical and emotional needs of the user as well as satisfying demands of the client. As such design needs to be approached in a holistic way. Immersing yourself in a problem is the best way to find a solution. Not just by gaining as much knowledge as possible, but by discovering and experiencing users' trials and tribulations first hand.
