John is a Vancouver based Art Director who brings breadth of experience & the agility to design across Film & Television genres. His strategic planning style & collaborative management with all departments bolster the storytelling aspects of Art Direction. With an analytical mind he sees the big picture while considering all the fine details, bringing a director’s vision to life in fast paced production environments. Coming up through the Art Dept., credits include Mission Impossible IV: Ghost Protocol, Twilight 2: Eclipse, the cult classic's Snakes on a Plane, Scooby Doo II - Monster's Unleashed & Minority Report (Cable Series) & Lost in Space Season 2 (SVOD).
Strong interests in Architecture, Interiors, Film, Photography & Fine Art drew him to Toronto’s Ryerson University, where he graduated with honors from their multi-faceted Bachelor or Applied Arts Design program. His career began with a Toronto based global, multi-disciplinary design consulting firm. Taking a multi-layered approach, weaving together the threads of Architecture, Interior Design, Graphics & Communications, he became the Toronto offices’ main concept designer, leading teams though the concept, design development and project management stages.
Research into a project’s regional design vernacular uncovered opportunities for strong narrative building, informing the architecture, interiors and graphics, contributing to the creation of engaging, entertaining & memorable place making. Leisure based projects across Canada, the U.S. & the UK, brought exciting opportunities to use his master planning and envisioning skills on the design of attractions, shopping environments & restaurants.
Always ready for new challenges he embraced a move to Vancouver, pursuing a long standing passion for Film Design in the Film & Television industry. Productions benefit from his experience expressing narrative building through design, developing character through the intentional & thoughtful relationship between set design, symbols, objects, color and texture. His previous experience proves to be an asset in the management of art department crew & the creative visualization & set / stage planning process as well as for cost & schedule management.
