Within the Hardware Development Group I was responsible for all aspects of the industrial design and mechanical detailing, non-electrical aspects of hardware products, all design and tooling production liaison with Asian suppliers, overseeing onsite tooling verification and approvals, and the pilot production runs in Asia. Other responsibilities included training production staff in the protocols and procedures for assembling new products, and the training and coordination of QC staff. These two consultancies operated out of Calgary, covering a wide variety of consumer and industrial marketplaces. The following four main service areas were applied to development projects depending on client and program requirements:
Problem Analysis: Understanding of the objectives and parameters required before providing the strategic planning documents, design briefs, and problem definitions, as well as the ergonomic and use analyses necessary for the following development stages.
Concept Development: Created a range of 2D & 3D sketches, initial CAD studies, proof of concept models necessary to effectively generate, refine, and target the design(s) required to successfully complete the development program.
Design Detailing: Providing complete CAD services to detail the product’s design ensured producible parts, ease of manufacture and assembly, and effective cost control. Clients and suppliers were closely involved in this stage to verify the chosen design direction would meet production requirements.
Production Services: Services offered in this area included: rapid prototype liaison and production through service shops in North America: providing the part drawings, tooling files, production and assembly documentation required for tooling, part production, and contract manufacturer: product artwork and labeling design and production.
As the principal in these design consultancies, my responsibilities included:
