The goal of the project was to design a sustainable kitchen for Schiffini. We started by analysing kitchens and materials from the past and present and researching innovative kitchen concepts and materials. We noticed that many elements in the kitchen are inaccessible to certain people, we made it our goal to render these elements easily accessible to all, and to create a kitchen that is not only designed using sustainable materials, but that encourages the user to live in a sustainable manner.
The containers are dedicated to the recycling of paper, aluminum, plastic and the fourth is for indoor composting. Each recycling container contains a manual waste compactor which increases the storage capacity and reduces the cost of transport/disposal. On the front of each container is an inscription, braille and a basic illustrations for those who have trouble reading and to encourage children to participate.
The compost system uses 5 kwh per month, about 30 cents per month which is alot less than the fuel that is used for the trucks to clear away rubbish. Inside there is a motor, a carbon filter, a mixer and heater. The waste remains in the upper container under optimal conditions: mixing, ventilation, heat and humidity ' Later the 'waste is transferred to the lower container and can be used for cultivation.
A project developed for Schiffini Kitchens.
