Art Tatum Pavilion

This pavilion project pays respect to Art Tatum, one of the most accomplished jazz pianists in the United States.
The pavilion structure will be located at the premises of 1123 City Park Avenue, adjacent to the existing childhood
home of the legendary artist. The caliber of Tatum’s accomplishments makes the now poor-condition existing
home a viable candidate for listing on the National Register of Historic Places as a building of national significance.
The project does not call for the intervention into the existing house structure by means of restoration or
rehabilitation, but will give consideration to the house-pavilion visual and functional relationship. As the Junction
neighborhood is now contemplating a variety of planning and design initiatives rooted in the community identity
and optimistic outlook, the pavilion project would be an informing and advocating feature.
