El ermitaño (The Hermit), 2020 An artwork from back in April – this reflects a lot of the work that I have recently made, depicting feelings of claustrophobia and discomfort with being trapped indoors. When I made this piece, I was in Barcelona, Spain, during the height of the pandemic. We were not allowed to leave our homes unless absolutely necessary, and I definitely went a bit crazy during that time. This is reflected in the artwork – a mutant figure is suspended in a room that is barely bigger than itself, with harsh light and shadow illuminating its lumps and bulges as if it is in a showroom.
How Time Can Bury One!, 2020 I let the previous artwork inform this piece, as I was exploring the idea of recurring themes and motifs in my artwork. I had noticed that a lot of my figures would be isolated in nothingness, so I challenged myself to give a bit more context with this artwork. With this, I wanted to explore the theme of the passage of time and entropy – the figure from El ermitaño has been eroded along with the building that once housed it, making it appear even more isolated than previously thought.
