MSc course's project - Climate Sensitive Environmental Design

Portland Works buidling is an old factory in Sheffield, UK. It was built in 1877 and in 1913, it became the first place in the world to manufacture stainless steel cutlery. Now it is a Grade II* listed building and is workshop space for metalworkers, engineers and craftsmen, furniture makers, artists and musicians.

This project required an evaluation of the building environmental performance. Assumed that the work spaces will continue to be used by the existing tenants, a proposed design should present sustainable solutions with consideration to the following:
- Prioritize use of climate, site features and low or zero carbon technologies.
- Energy efficiency.
- Enhance the comfort and amenity for occupants.
- Utilise the positive aspects of climate wherever possible.
