TRANSPORTATION DESIGN: Urban Utilitarian Vehicle

"L'Elefante di Piaggio" is my graduate thesis redesign of Piaggio's APE, a three-wheeled trike that steers nimbly and centrally, like a motorcycle. The design brief was to create an urban utilitarian runabout for the small contractor or parent with limited budget and space.

The result is a modular frame of blow-moulded panels configurable on the existing APE chassis. Panels can be entirely left on to have a cube van configuration; half-on for a pick-up; or fully removed for a flatbed. The roof and underside of the tail-end were designed to securely store unused panels so as to eliminate the need for external storage.

Panels are structurally strong, hollow, light, stylish and inexpensive to replace.
