The purpose of this project was to practice ideation. We were tasked with coming up with at least 300 rough sketches at the start and narrow down from there. I had this idea of a hand fairly early on, and the basic theme was prevalent in many of my iterations.
Eventually, the idea was transferred to be a toy robot because I saw the hand as not being exciting enough. A hand would have had to have been more sculptural, whereas I wanted something I could play with.
This was a quick ten minute mock up. There were a lot of things wrong with it (most notably the slightly creepy face), but I was so happy with it and new that this was the product that I wanted to make.
I felt that the chest area was severely lacking, and in this phase, I was attempting to find a more elegant solution that a simply block of wood for the chest piece.
After several attempts, I finally had a finished chest piece.
All of the pieces stained and ready to assemble.
In the final design. I constructed the toy in a way so that when the owner shoots at the toy, the head sinks into the body to simulate the toys "death". I wanted the head to go into the body rather than fly out so that it would not get lost and the only piece that could get lost is easily replaceable.
The angles in the joints allow for organic and interesting poses.
