Playing on visual cues from wind and sea, the concept was a sail-like, cleaner design appearance. Front and rear grills were designed with long verticals that are easily removed for cleaning. The filter grid's handle is integrated as a scoop into the top surface acting as both removal and locking carry grip. The control interface is reduced to a single setting dial and boost feature to declutter the surface.
The Hybrid GP air purifier was the first combination design using fan system to assist in pulling air through the unit and the electrostatic array. This combination yielded excellent function in a package almost twice as large as the original, but still with a foot print of less than half of the competition and far lower power draw. The design worked to keep the family look intact as much as possible, keeping the same functional appearance for the consumer looking to upgrade or add. Design challenges in large injection molding tools dictated using the largest components in a symmetrical makeup as well as ease of access and maintenance inside and out. This new combination approach to air purifier design development became the direction that future projects followed.

Air Purification: Series 2

Series 2: Electrostatic and Hybrid Air Purification, 2002 - 2006.

During the second half of my work with The Sharper Image the majority of my design & development time was spent on the wildly successful air purifier projects. Much of my work centered on the 2.0 and 2.1 generations of product since the Ionic Breeze introduction in late 1998/1999.

The goal was to update and upscale the Ionic Breeze line of air purifiers, improve the ease of general maintenance and increase the overall durability of the product.
