After looking into the laundry machines industry and through our research in the features and sustainability aspects, we decided to go with a more sustainable approach in our concept design. We want to put special focus on the use-phase because close to 80% of a product’s environmental impact occurs when it is in operation. Following this reasoning, to focus in user behavior is really important, exploring the relationship between the person and his washer to bring back part of the environmental responsibility to the user. We want the machine to help users to make the most sustainable decisions when it comes to do laundry, and also drying. As another part of the research, we noticed that every machine’s description (the new and efficient ones) talk about water usage, electricity consumption, thus, money savings but they mention little if anything of ease of repair or the ability to update the system.
