The Charm City Roller Girls are a local women’s sports organization that is often publicizing games in as many ways as fiscally reasonable. In 2014, this included a regular ad in Baltimore’s alternative weekly free paper, the City Paper. The ad was specifically designed to be very noticeable in a newspaper that is otherwise full of attention-seeking advertising. My intention was to make the message as clear as possible with prominent typography and colors that would catch a reader’s eye. The ad did lead to additional tickets sold, but as with much newspaper advertising, it was challenging to determine outcomes but the league was happy to have a regular presence in a prominent newspaper that reached to the proper target market. This also included similar online banners ads (not shown).
