MaterialMaterial is a new micro manufacturer and web shop of modern everyday objects focused on minimalist design and handcraft. I created Box and Tray specifically for MM in the Summer of 2013.
Inspired by modern day tech packaging. I wondered how sturdy paper forms might be useful in a more everyday context.
Construction consists of two thicknesses of paper board cross grained at the base for strength and layered under fine quality pigmented papers. When placed on a flat surface, the slightly inset base creates a thin cast shadow along the edges of the base, creating an added layer of depth and substantiality to the overall design.
A raised divider allows for smaller items to be stored conveniently on one side of Box, while Tray may be used to display objects upright or inside its tapered shape.
Box and Tray were designed simultaneously to work individually and as a pair.
