Wild Birds of the American Wetlands
In 2008, the museum teamed up with reknown bird photographer, Rosalie Winard to bring her images and research to Salt Lake City.
Utilizing imagery and existing design elements from her recently published book, I developed and designed an immersive environment that gave our visitors an intimate look into the private and dynamic lives of migratory birds.
I used a variety of materials, from scrims to lightboxes, to give Rosalie’s images a vitality that represents moments of intimacy and moments of broad magnificence. Designing freestanding elements like the angled monoliths at the entrance was essential in creating an active and dynamic environment that is reminiscent of birds in flight. Scale was used to look at birds within landscape and community and up close to show surprising details of form and beauty. Existing typefaces and color palettes were integrated across all elements of the exhibit to create a branded environment.
